It has to be said that when needed or called upon we bikers can and will step up...

Yesterday I travelled up to a place 40 minutes away from Warwick and attended the funeral of mates young boy and the church was packed out by family friends understandably. But it was also great to see that due my mate being a biker (and his son loved them too) a bunch of bikers accompanied the hearse on its route as a mark of respect.

Just had to be said :)

I have done a few of these rides, some for people I've never met, after a request from families who want a biker escort. It seems to give the bereaved family a lot of pleasure and comfort to see a big turnout so I'm happy to do them. Of course, if it's not the funeral of a close friend you wait until everyone goes in for the service and then leave as quietly as possible.
I was doubtful at first as I always assumed everyone present would be friends or family of the deceased, but it turns out that for some people it is a good turnout that matters. I have pondered over it for myself and decided that I would much appreciate an escort and it wouldn't need to be just people I know. I see it as a mark of respect for anyone who would like an escort.

I think most would go along if asked, but might not be clear as to why they'd said Yes. Only on reflection would they come to your conclusion, I reckon. If the deceased is a friend or even just a distant acquaintance then there's no dispute - you'd attend. But there is a natural affinity between bikers which extends beyond death: if you go into a cafe and see someone in a biking jacket and there's a bike outside, you'd probably at least say Hello and maybe end up sitting with them and having a chat. If you see someone sitting disconsolately by his machine at the side of the road, you stop and offer them a litre of fuel or a lift, don't you? If it's a car driver, leave 'em to the AA.

I saw further evidence of the Biking Fraternity when I we went on our annual camping trip, when Rosie had a little trouble. The man came by several times, offering storage for the bike, offering to run her to the campsite (2hr round trip), offering to run her to the train station and even bringing us drinks whilst we waited for the breakdown service... All because he was an ex-biker, looking out for those that shared a love of what he used to do.
