im looking to buy a power inverter for my mobile workshop to run the compressor and in the future a tyre machine. I ideally want to put 3 pin plugs in the van too. Does anyone know what power inverter I would need to buy?

The ones with the most wattage output that you can afford. Think they usually come with a fan.

ideally if the budget allows go for a "pure sine wave" inverter as they give a better conditioned ac voltage which more sensitive equipment will need... also they tend to be better designed and more efficient at turning dc into ac and not wasting loads in the process.. also when factoring what your max current draw is going to be, take into account most machinery that has a motor will have quite a large inrush current when it first starts up, this should be listed in the specs of the equipment. for example a 500w 240v drill will use roughly 2 amps or so at full blast but could draw anywhere upto 4 amps to get it spinning... ive simplified that quite a lot, in reality figuring out current usage from devices is much more complicated but you get the idea - reason I mention it is a lot of inverters have a safety cut off if too much load is put on it at once so you need to make sure you build in plenty of headroom
