My work colleague lives by himself in Walton on Thames and has stored a bunch of furniture and other household stuff in a 40' container in a storage facility nearby (basically, a field). The council have decided that the storage facility business is not entitled to be in this particular field and is going to clear everything away on the 1st of February. He fears he'll lose the lot.

He has been offered alternative storage in a dry barn near Sevenoaks, Post Code
TN8 6PB; Chittenden House, four hundred yards from Hemden Manor signpost
but has to move everything there; because he has a heart condition, I have agreed to lend a hand and to drive a truck if he hires one, but there are several weighty items (eg. a shoulder-high safe!) which I cannot lift by myself. His neighbours can pitch in with loading the van in Walton, but would anyone be available to organise a rideout to a location near Sevenoaks, to strain all your back muscles, pinch your fingers against door posts and drop heavy furniture on your feet during next Tuesday afternoon? Then ride home? :worthy:

I'd tell him to get a removal company, except that he has no money to do so. I will try to put in for beer and petrol money for you and organise some teas and coffees and sticking plaster.

I'll put up the address of the destination as soon as he can find it out, but it's just outside Sevenoaks, apparently. If anyone can help out for a couple of hours, it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm about as much use at lifting and carrying as chocolate is a fire retardant material, but if there's an extra packet of matches or similar item that will fit in my car then I'm there!
Actually lifting I'm great at, just can't go anywhere once I've done it :p

There's nothing to stop you coming along, Dave! You'd be very welcome and can organise the teas & coffees and direct people. I still have to get the address, though.

Hi, sorry I cant give you any physical help but I can give you some advice. That Safe could weigh anything from 2cwt up to 2tons (old money). Unless you know what your doing its best leave it where it is. Its probably not worth much anyway...
If your friend wants to keep the Safe then I can arrange for it to be moved but this doesnt come cheap.

    Hope this helps

    Phil

Sage advice, Phil and thank you. I have no interest in cricking my back or anyone else's; I'm told it took three men to place it - of course, the man's mind may have confused that with the refrigerator last year... It was £1,000 new, apparently and is worth possibly £100, delivered, now. Still... it's not my decision, thankfully. I'm keen to help out, not just because he's my friend, but also because he's had a pretty torrid time over the last few years, losing both his wife and daughter (and one of the cats) to cancer and having a heart attack himself.

Sorry dude I'm working, although would probably not be much good as I shy away from lifting anything heavy these days since I had a back op few yrs back.

I've edited the first post to include the Post Code TN8 6PB; looking at GoogleMaps satellite picture I suspect Chittenden House is very close to the turn off at the corner on the B 2042 where the Google drawing Pin has been located.

It's inconveniently timed, I'm afraid, being a weekday. Thanks, everyone, for trying to make it. If we can rustle (Russell? - That isn't a hint!) up two more we'll be ok.

Dave, Les and Deano - I'll PM you my mobile. I haven't worked out what time we'll get there, but I imagine it'll be mid afternoon - 3pm-ish.

Sorry - would do it if it were Sunday, but absolutely no way I can take time off mid week. I do have a sturdy trolley you can borrow if you need one.
