Some of that's correct though I had a mini cooper s new in 2003 paid £17200 for it sold it back to the same dealer on px 4k miles later 3 months later for £17100 when a px for a three series oil burner!!! So that was cheap motoring for those few months considering ! Though my present car an A3 which I bought 3 years ago and 3 years has depreciated by 66% since then so that dosen't seam to add up with there findings!!

When I used to work in the motor trade, the general rule was any new car would lose between 45% & 65% of its value over 3 years/36000 miles.

My car has held it's value pretty well all considered, that said by the time I'm done with it holding it's wheels on might be the most I can hope for...

I'm not worried about new car values cos I never buy one new! :giggle: (but I guess if funds permitted I'd have a new Porker or something) :D

My 2.2 Z3, bought for £10500 after 3 years sold it for £5200 and I only put 16k miles on it so when I sold it, it was an 8 year old motor with 64k on the clock. My current motor wont lose much in value as I only paid £770 for it and have a spare set of alloys for it. Even the steering wheel is worth £250 on its own. Having said that, who else would buy an X reg 2.5 litre V6 Rover 75 with less than 100k on the clock.

I once bought a Mini for £10, used it for a year and sold it for £50. It had a full length (OK that's not very long) fabric fold back sun roof, and ran beautifully for up to ten miles at a time (partially blocked fuel lines). Didn't have floating disks, but did have floating rear suspension as a result of the rear subframe not being entirely attached to the rest of the car. Don't worry Skotchio they are fabulous cars :speechless:

Generally speaking anything French/Italian/Korean will devalue rapidly.

Ex-demonstartors are good buys in my opinion. Generally a fair few thousand pounds less than they were new, and very low mileage.

And of course MINIs are the best........ but I am biased hehe x

As will Ford & Vauxhall due to the fact they make up the majority of fleet cars.

Yup! Anyhing 'mass produced'. Too many of them on the market to hold any value.

My guvnor bought a lexus ISF 3 years ago, was told by lexus that only 350 will be made so shouldnt depreciate that much, he just part exed it for a jag...they gave 23k for it! It hadnt even clocked up more than 30k miles!

On the flip-side is that it does give someone a more affordable car when the fleets let them go. If you are canny though, you can get some good deals. Back in the 90`s, we bought a 9month old, high mileage (20k) 3.0l Senator. We ran that car for 15 months & when we traded that in, because it was no longer high mileage for its age, we got a better deal & got back exactly what we paid for it.

Can't afford an even vaguely recent vehicle of any kind, though I'd probably not but brand new even if I could. Every vehicle I buy depreciates rapidly from the moment I get it. It's just something about me, I think!

Rare models of the Delorean appreciate fantastically in value , but only early 80's models with optional extra speaker insulation in the doors. :D

I was pretty happy to buy a 911 Carrera in 1985 for £22,000 (Bummer having to pay for it with order two years in advance, but that was the situation then) and sell it in 2008 for £12,000 (Ok, there had been 80,000 miles' worth of servicing and fuel to pay as well), but I reckoned that was pretty decent on the depreciation front. And not ridiculously expensive to insure, either (with an eye on a different thread). The most recent was £450, fully comp (max NCD).

Yeah, some of the cars that passed thru my hands over years may be worth a bit now but were pretty rubbish:(compared to modern stuff. I always hankered after an early 911 but even if now more within budget the fuel bill would be prohibitive. Friend of ours has a Mk1 Capri he uses (& races) & it evokes memories & nostalgia but don't you reckon the days of petrol heads are over?
