Schoolgirl, five, killed and grandmother fights for life after being hit by convoy of motorbikes while crossing road

A five-year-old girl died today after being knocked down by two motorbikes, while her grandmother remains in a critical condition.

The 72-year-old’s two other granddaughters, aged 10 and six, also received serious injuries in the horrific crash in Weymouth, Dorset, on Sunday.

The five-year-old girl, who has not yet been named, suffered severe head injuries in the collision and died at the Southampton General Hospital.

Distraught: Some of the motorbike riders comfort each other after the crash in Weymouth - none of the riders were arrested

Tragedy: The five-year-old girl died afterwards from her injuries

The family had been crossing a busy road towards a nature reserve when all four were struck by the two machines.

The woman and her youngest granddaughter were flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where there is a special neurological unit.

The two other young girls were airlifted to the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, where they are in a stable condition.

A convoy of three motorbikes were carrying a total of five people. Two of them were taken to hospital with minor injuries and shock.

In the aftermath of the sickening crash, witnesses saw the grandmother and the five-year-old lying motionless on the road and the other two girls were seen crying.

Shocking: The family's belongings were scattered over the road afterwards

Harrowing: The injured were airlifted to hospital and the road was closed while police investigated

A bag of crisps, a pair of brown shoes and a dark blue jumper belonging to the girls were scattered on the carriageway.

Some local residents who tried to help at the scene broke down in tears at the harrowing sight.

Geoffrey Carey, who lives nearby, said: ‘I heard a motorbike then deathly silence.

‘It was sickening and I feel absolutely gutted, we use that crossing every day and it could have been us.’

Resident Des Monaghan said: ‘There was a young girl crying and sobbing and screaming.’

Investigation: A police photographer at the scene of the accident with one of the motorbikes on its side in the verge

Police have said the bikes involved were a black Honda CBR 1,100, a green Yamaha Fazer and a black-and-white Honda CBR 600.

The accident on the Weymouth Way happened near Swannery Bridge.

Although there are two crossings at either end of this stretch of road, locals have been campaigning for a third to be added.

A housing estate borders one side of the road while there is a footpath, lake and nature reserve on the other.

It would appear the family, who are from Weymouth, had been crossing the road to get onto the path when they were struck by the motorcycles.

The road was closed for four hours as investigators examined the scene.

Inspector Matt Butler, of Dorset police, said: ‘It is with great sadness that I inform you that the five-year-old girl injured in the collision on the A354 Weymouth Way has died from her injuries.

‘Her grandmother remains in a critical condition and her two sisters are in a stable condition.

‘The family are being supported a trained family liaison officer.

‘Our investigation team are interviewing witnesses and examining forensic evidence to determine exactly how the collision happened.’

A police spokesman added that at the time of the crash the road surface and visibility were ‘fine.’

Two male bikers were riding with women pillion passengers on the black Honda motorbike and the green Yamaha at the time. A woman biker was riding the white Honda by herself.

None of the motorcyclists were arrested.

i'm happy to blame someone, i mean there's only 2 crossings that could have been used but weren't. Notice the lack of braking marks on the road  or the distance the bike has slid off the road, hadly a lot of distance to denote high speed.

Nothing about the circumstances? Did they walk out without checking for vehicles? Did they even look. Bash the biker time???

This report has been written to be as sensational as possible. For a start when did 3 bikes become a convoy? Also none of the motorcyclists were arrested, hence they weren't to blame and as Tom says there were two proper crossings on the road. Whilst I am sorry someone has lost their life it sounds more like they were to blame and could just as easily have been hit by a car as a bike.

Being a health care professional with that hat on....

I hope the support of the "The family are being supported a trained family liaison officer." is being extended to the bikers as well. It's not just the injured who are victims in situations like this.....

    Hat off....

at this moment in time i am shocked to read ot only the comments on the web page but those here and on other forums .....why is anyone speculating blame ?....no evidence has been shown for blame.
a 5 year old has lost her life ...an innocent which ever way you look at it there are other human beings that have to live with that! family, the riders, the emergency crews that had to attend, so how about we all get of our moral soapboxes and take a moment to think of them.
im no softy and if the evidence is clear ill point the finger and add my condolences to the innocent parties.

When anything like this happens & is discussed by people not directly involved there will always be finger pointing & speculation from both sides. Unfortunately its human nature.

I think some are looking to have the press to have something against bikers. ALL press stories are written in way to sensationalise a story. Even if this had been a car, lorry or horse and cart it would have made the press. It is a tragedy no matter what way you look at it. A life is lost. A young life. Will we ever know the truth? I bet it wont be published so well. But spare a moment for the riders, the pillions, the injured, the families of all concerned and lets not forget the emergency services . Despite them 'just doing thier job' do they ever used to a loss of life especially when so young?

Get real, a kid has dies, others are injured and all some people care about is a bit of bad publicity for bikers. The investigation will take time and any arrests won't necessarily be immediate. No blame is actually apportioned but some of the language tries to imply something, but that would be no different to any major road accident reported in the press.

Think you're all missing the point,
Yes, Great shame about the kid, but would this really get so much coverage if it were a car , truck or whatever, I think not.....
As for skid marks, when i had a big off there wasn't any skidders and I wasn't hanging about either ...so not necessarily so......prob' the usual pedestrian thing of not bothering to look......:nah:
    Megawatt got the point......

The story writer did their job then because it got your attention!

Lets see what the investigation turns out before making any judgements on anyone, that is what should have been portrayed somewhere.

True, bikeers are given bad press but so are a lot of other stereotypical people/proffessions. I will garuntee that almost everyone on here has had one of 'those' thoughts about a person or persons. Even it was just for a split second.

I've ridden down in southhampton and the new forest area and accidents like this are narrowly avoided all the time with cars, bike and lorries. Speaking as a father I cannot for one moment think why someone who is with three children would not use the crossings that are provided. This woman being a local would know how dangerious the roads are there and still she risk herself and the lives of the children to save herself a further walk. Just as many have said in the past something like 60+% pedestrian vs car, lorries, bike accidents are caused within 100 meters of a safe crossing that was not used.
