Here we go again! It runs perfectly and rides perfectly with the Petrol tap at 'Prime' but if I turn it to 'on' or 'reserve' it starts to cut out! Whats that all about then? confused!

Sounds like the vacuum pipe isn't connected properly. If you're not worried about having a reserve, you can always leave it on prime?

the petcock s on earlier gs500 are known to go wrong so could be the diapragm in the pecock itself not opening properly even with correct vaccum, or as spin said vacuum line not connected properly or perhaps kinked when tank put back on.

Hmmm vacum pipe, which one would that be? Got the 2 pipes going from the tank to petcock (reserve and normal fuel feed) and one from petcock to carbs (fuel feed pipe) am I missing something? I assumed the vacum was created in the carbs and just caused fuel to be drawn through normal fuel feed line. With the prime being a way of cutting the vacum system off and relying on gravity to cause fuel to flow through the same line? :(

Heres a diagram of the pipe set up
    [IMG]
The vaccum comes from the left hand carb, the outlet looks the same on both carbs but the right hand one is blanked off.
The vaccum pipe is furthest from the tap end of the petlock.

later style just moved placement of hoses, but seems less prone to going wrong also

iirc the vaccum hose on the earlier taps are on the back of the unit itself... this diagram shows the layout. 7 is the vaccum hose gs1.jpg

Quite honestly vacuum taps are a PITA, and the GS one is particularly awkward as there's a second hidden tap on the bottom of the tank to stop fuel p!ssing out when you take the tank off.

Kev what's PITA? Other than a nice bread you get kebabs in that is?
You're right about the awkward little valve on the bottom of the tank what a git to get to!
