Thats the other annoying thing about them, when they are in the distance in your review mirror, especially if you are on the motorway and they are intermittently shining through the gaps in the barriers, it looks like flashing police lights! Man, my nerves are shot from the number of times Ive thought they are after me and it turns out to be some muppet in a beemer.

hid's themselves are not illegal however retrofitting them to vehicles not designed for them is afaik.. all hid lights have to be self levelling and have washers. . ALso the housing are designed specifically to shape the light beam so it isnt as obnoxious.

pretty sure that to pass mot and be legal retrofitted light kits have to have self levelling function either via suspension or the headlamp itself as a minimum... there was a discussion on this a short while ago on one of the traffic cop forums and also a big review of the situation in auto express awhile ago..

From what I've read, aftermarket HID's will pass an MOT as MOT's just test for light output, but are illigal if fitted to a standard halogen headlamp. As Deano says they need to be self levelling, have washers and be projector headlamps...

    They do look nice tho...

Problem with uprated bulbs is they don't last long... I had them in my BMW a few years ago and were changing them every 6 months or so...

Really does depend on the brand, and to some extent the bike - the Hornet's had a +50% bulb in it since 02 and it's still going strong. And of course, whether you use it in daytime!

    Ta.

Getting back on topic, there is a 60/55w version of the Bosch fitting available - these people do them:
    http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffybulbs.htm

You'll need to scroll down the page just under halfway - it's a bit of a mess! But whether the scoot has enough output from the alternator is another matter... I very much doubt it would run two at the same time!

    HTH!

No probs, now take that to a bike shop and find a 50/55watt equivalent ie with the same fitting. Make sure the bayonet pins are in the same position!

As Megawatt said, Halfords should carry them James.

Looks like it could be a BA20D - just pop a rule across the bulb and measure the diameter of the metal part, if it's a BA20D then it's 20mm across.

The main problem is that you're going to need to find something that keeps the filaments and the little deflector in the same place.

The link I gave above has a 60/55w in this fitting but your alternator may struggle, this should be a direct replacement 45/40w which should give a bit more light without overloading the system.

Be careful - there are cheaper 45/45w bulbs around but they are old-fashioned incandecent, not halogen.

Sorry to disappoint but I can't see them on the Halfords website - they only carry 25/25 and 35/35. I think you'll probably have to go mail order.
