Ok then, on a more serious note - I think I speak for most bikers when I say that we really do have to concentrate a great deal more than most other road users. We have to be so much more aware of road surfaces, other vehicles, road conditions etc etc, not to mention always riding defensively. This may be borne out of the fact that it doesn't take us long to gain an intrinsic 'sixth sense' about the behaviour of other road users, primarily because as we ride, we're carefully predicting situations or conditions which may cause us to get closer to the tarmac than we might have wished for.

However (and here's my gripe), this sense of awareness isn't always shared by cars / vans etc. As such, other distractions can soak up a driver's concentration (like fiddling with the radio, applying make-up, getting stuff out of the glove box, fiddling with satnavs, eating... in fact, the list is almost endless), since when safely cocooned in a metal box, a driver's mind is not as in-tune with the immediate environment as a biker's.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a car driver myself. I'm not perfect (by any means!), but I do know that whilst riding a bike may not necessarily have made me a better driver, it has indeed made me a more aware one.

I think one of the biggest controlling factors is FEAR! We do take more care generally because the consequences are greater. I wonder if we were to line the inside of cars with sharp spikes as oppose to air bags whether accident rates would drop, although fatalities may rise in proportion to the number of accidents!

Wasn't there an experiment re this? Someone mounted a spike instead of the horn button on the steering wheel...apparently it improved his driving no end. I do the same sometimes for short rides in summer with t shirt & shorts on the bike:(.

So....... to pick up an 'Olde Debate' regarding what is acceptable clothing to wear on a bike, (Stay with me;)), generally speaking, doesn't this idea support the theory that a biker riding a bike in shorts and t-shirt is more likely to take greater care whilst riding their bike than another biker who has a sense of 'fuller' protection''? :giggle:
