Just answered the phone to a bloke I could barely understand due to his heavy accent. Claimed he was from Microsoft.
Asked if I had my computer on and said that it had "told them" that it was under severe threat of hacking"
At this point I told him to F*** OFF.....
Thought maybe it would be an idea to share it with you lot, just in case anyone else gets this. Never had this one before!

That's quite a common from of attack, con the user into installing some crap and wanting their card/bank details to undo it.

I just think it's touching that Microsoft care enough about their users to even call up just to check there's no problems with the ones using pirated copies!

    There's Xmas spirit for you.

also worth noting they use various names and will also claim to be from tiscali, virgin etc... so if your with one of those providers , there are quite a few people who fall for it.. good tell tale sign is that they will get you to goto logmein.com or another remote access variant , get you to let them access your pc then they will try and bamboozle you by opening up a command prompt and temp file folders and then proceed to tell you you have infection xyz or whatever and ask for a bunch of money to fix it.. had about 5 customers so far in the last 4 months that got hit .... unfortunately there is a higher percentage of elderly computer users round here so they tend to fall for it more often

They ring me regularly -I love playing along.......... usually guys - But Fiona has called me twice ....... shes nice - (yeh.right) I ask them the most inane questions ... too .. it passes 5 or 10 mins on a cold winters day lol. As it happens Micrososft DID ring me ...I had contacted them with a prob about Silverlight --and they actually RUNG ME - The guy explained everything too - Micorsoft will email first to say they will call- The email has a security word or number, that the microsft guy tells you - So when the bogus people ring I make out I am looking for email (whilst making a coffee) comes back to phone and apoligies for keeping them waiting etc etc ... I love it *sad cow here* lol

Not sad at all.....the usual marketing calls ask "is ******** there" I reply "yes, I shall just go and get her" then leave them to it whilst I watch tv or cook dinner. Sometimes they stay on for quite some time!

Send Les a 'PM'? He'll get confused and turn up in the afternoon. Probably best to send him a fax instead... or message him via his pager. He's bang on trend you know.

'Insert floppy' / RAM / hard drive'??? If someone telephoned me and spoke about stuff like that, I'd get confused too. Not confused with the subject matter, just confused with who had called who. After all, I'd normally pay 50p per minute for that kind of thing.

Quote: Not confused with the subject matter, just confused with who had called who. Did you mean to write "...who had called who"? As Grammar Nazi #2, I should have expected you to include the 'm'. Does this mean I am now higher than you in the G.N. stakes? :giggle:
