High beams are designed for lighting up the maximum amount of road at night. As such they point more forwards than down which means you run the risk of dazzling an oncoming driver, even in the day as the intense part of the light is going to be more at eye level. You must have followed a car during the day with its rear fog left on when there`s plenty of visibility & sworn at them as its so damned bright, even though its a red light which is more "eye friendly" that white light. This is going to be made worse with Bi-xenon lamps or the new HID lights being fitted these days as you`ll be hidden behind a bright white spot of light.

With this in mind, you run the risk of being pulled for doing it as its technically illegal as per the highway code rule 114

Which in turn references The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations (1989)

the thing is riding with Brett his lights don't dazzle. There are a few bikers who ride on full beam in the day time and I rarely notice but then I am yet to find any bike lights that are anywhere as bright as those on a car.

I think maybe we should put a test together and see what works and where it works

    Hi vis versus reflective clothing.
Headlights on / off /full beam and coloured lights

There are enough bikes and bikers on here to get a pretty good range of views all based on our personally experiences but doing a test could give an answer

( it won't of course but it would mean riding our bikes and drinking lots of coffee while we debate it )

I can`t comment one way or the other, as I don`t recall ever passing him coming the other way with his headlight on full beam. I was just pointing out the potential legal implications of riding with it on.

Right or Wrong RW, I rather I take a risk of upsetting a few drivers or even the plod than stop people pulling out in front of me, even traveling at less than the speed limit I have actually had to stop because lorries have pulled out. don' t often get flashed for HB on, and never behind a car , lorry long enough to upset them :p

at first the police hated that but I have since seen a comment from them supporting it. It's bloody scary when you come up behind someone wearing it a bit quickish

I can imagine actually Tom as they think that it will pretend to be a police presence, until someone panics and slams their brakes on and causes an accident then they will probably condemn it

I ride with headlamp on high beam during the day and especially in bright sunshine. If it bothers car drivers, it means they've seen me.

maybe but then they haven't done that when it's been a real police officer so guessing they won't care that much

Not a fan of the "Polite" range for bikes, horses or anything else for that matter. Pushing a bit too close to impersonating a police officer for my liking.

As I said earlier, I`ve given my reasons for not doing it. As long as you appreciate you *could* get a tug with the possibility of a fine/points & don`t complain if you do, its your choice.

My worry is that bikers wearing their high vis yellow/pink with lights on will think all driver will see then - wrong. It is in our own interest to judge if a driver has seen you, never assume they have.

I could be decked out like a Xmas tree and I would still assume they hadn't seen me.
