Hi all, the exhaust on my Bandit has rusted away at the point where the front and rear join. I have a replacement rear pipe and was wondering if there is anything i can coat it with to prevent it going the same way. Would red oxide paint be suitable? Any suggestions welcome! Ta.

The best fix is to replace mild steel with stainless or Titanium. If you must stick with mild steel, paint it with barbecue paint, regularly.

Barbecue paint? I shall look it up. I am going to get the old pipe re welded with stainless. Apart from the mild steel part its immaculate! Thanks for the advice.

Can you TiG weld??? If I decides to keep my YZF, I might want to spend a few quids to get some mods done to the alloy swingarm.

I do the fabrication and get a professional welder to do the welding.

At the moment it looks like this images.jpg

But would like it to look like this with fabricated alloy plates welded in the gaps untitled - Copy.png

Is it possible & what's the damage???

There's no point mixing mild and stainless on the same pipework. If 90% of it's mild then a tiny corrosion resistant patch makes little to no sense.

BBQ paint isn't up to the rigours of 80mph spray and dirt being flung at it and the heat build up is far higher on an exhaust, you'll be recoating it every week. I used higer temp paint on the Mini exhaust and it lasted all of about 25minutes.

Best coating for exhaust pipes is ceramic, it's not overly expensive and it's treat and forget. Plus you can have it in a range of crazy colours ;)

Your ally plates shouldn't cost you more than 2hours work, unless you want them to brush finish the ally too. It's simple shapes and easy to access. Don't know what the going rates are down south and the aerospace guy I use is a friend so my idea of costs are probably a tad on the low side
