Thats because the colder weather makes the fuel denser. Denser fuel = bigger bang

Ah yes, but pressure seals work one way, pressure coming from the hydraulics, like crankcase seals, otherwise they'd pee oil out all over the shop......inwhich case water could get forced beyond the seal the other way...... looking at this logically.....

    No, they don't.

Take the piston out your caliper. The seal is a rubber O ring, which sits in a groove below the lip of the caliper face. It's not shaped nor uni directional in it's function. Otherwise there'd have to be little arrows on them so you didn't seat them back to front :p

The way you can tell this is that the inside of the piston is never dirty, if the seal only worked one way the retracting of the piston would drag in dirt or water with it and as your brake fluid doesn't suddenly develop water in it over time, that cannot be the case.

All the geek you can handle. :)

Add it to the box of 400 parts and I'll do it once I've made the boot lining for Ogy, end of next week ;)

The water can get past the dust seal which would in turn corrode the piston over time.....so there.....:phead:

Dave, the dust 'seal' isn't a seal it's a gaiter or boot, if you're referring to the loose corregated rubber shroud on sliding piston calipers.
Their design is to stop foreign bodies fouling the piston track, not to act as a water tight seal.

    Seen here:

The seal is the seen here in position 6:

I'm going to stop there as we're heading off topic.
    In summary:
    1. Exercise caution if you choose to use a pressure washer on your bike.
    2. Avoid directly spraying electrical connectors, bearings and moving parts (most of the moving parts on a bike are greased anyway so water resisitent).
    3. Use a water displacer on any ferrous parts after washing (WD40).
    4. Regrease / lube the vital bits once you're done.
    5. ACF50 on downpipes and exposed frame will save you a lot of cleaning over time.
    6. HD is wrong. (Has the right idea but can't admit making a mistake apparently :ond:)
