I am a biographies person myself.

plus i am a bit of a cheat as i download some as talking books, as i often can't sleep without a bit of noise so i listen to my iphone and the author reading their own book

Whoa, I totally forgot that I collect (and read) John Wyndham books. He wrote a few under a pseudonym, Lucas Parkes. Same goes for Ray Bradbury and Philip K. Dick. Not that much into fantasy stuff tho.

    Bikers read too.

Personally, I quite like John Waters' take on this.

Porn mags don't count as books. ;) :p

But normally, yes, that is the kind of thing that I would usually respond to in a favourable manner.

Did anybody else notice how subtle Finchy is about these things? I mean the use of the word 'absorbent' to indicate he isn't actually reading them at all, or at least he describes an alternative use and likely fate of the article in question. Had he said 'absorbing' that would have a different connotation!

It rather reminds me of the tale told of Sir Winston Churchill, whose chosen reading matter when in what the Colonials call 'The John', was cabinet papers. (That's appropriately named to start with). One morning his servant rushed in to the larger bath room, knocked on the loo door and begged Sir Winston's pardon, but Lord Privy Seal was awaiting without and demanding the great man's answer to the papers he'd submitted last night.

Reportedly, Sir Winston retorted, "Tell The Lord Privy Seal that I am sealed in the privy; his papers are before me and will shortly be behind me".

Im more of a reluctant reader, you know, i feel i ought too but cant be arsed, a bit like feeling i must try and appreciate classical music, :yright: .

When studying last, i was recommended a couple which i enjoyed:
''Life of Pi'' by Yann Martel.
''Northern Lights'', ''Subtle Knife'', Amber Spyglass'' by Philip Pullman.

I also felt obliged to read ''Captain Corellis Mandolin'' as i was told by several peeps that it was really good,so started about 3 years ago ( it was in a top 10 of top 100 books). I have picked it up and very shortly put it down again no less than 5 times, i really need to bin it. what a load of boring, unengaging poo :poop: imo. :D

You're absolutely right; I've never found those articles to be absorbing. As such, they do indeed suffer the same fate as Sir Churchill's unfavoured documents :poop:.

nope as a musician i can appreciate the complexity of combining so many instruments into a whole. the thought and techinical ability required is mind boggling. As a listener of music i cant stand it.. bores the crap out of me and sounds pretty much all the same... :D
