    RING OF RED Rider Info

We are not going to complete a Ring of Red on the M25 by all just flying out on to the motorway and trying to sort it out there.

We believe the best way of completing this ride successfully is to try and control the rate that we enter the M25 from the various start points. What we aim to do is start all rides at approximately the same time behind a lead rider. We will then slowly release all the riders behind that leader (one every couple of seconds or so) so that the last rider to leave (Tail-End Charlie) is soon met by the lead rider that is coming from the previous start point on the M25.

This means that it may take a long time to leave your starting point, so chill.

    Safety Stuff

    1. Ride for yourself. Group riding at motorway speeds is potentially hazardous and having a mindset that someone else is responsible for your safety isn't the way to undertake this ride, so each rider must conduct themselves as if they were riding alone and not as a group but be aware at all times that your actions may affect the safety of others around you

    2. Joining the Ring of Red. Irrespective of where you are joining, the technique is the same. Enter in single file with several seconds between bikes and accelerate to motorway speed on the slip road. There might well be slower moving traffic on the inside lane but do not at this stage be over concerned about maintaining your position in the ride, simply enter the motorway in the safest possible manner. You can then make your contribution to the Ring of Red further along the motorway.

Don’t be tempted to start overtaking other riders in the column, let the riders ahead of you overtake the slower moving traffic first, you can make up any gaps in the ring once you’re clear. Don’t overtake the lead rider.

    3. Forming the Ring of Red. - Where conditions permit, ride between 60 and 70 MPH as riding too slow in the inside lane (Lane 1) can be just as dangerous.  If there is slower moving traffic in the inside lane then overtake (Lane 2) and when safe to do so return to Lane 1.  DO NOT USE LANE 3.  Allow other vehicles to both leave and join the motorway by slowing and allowing them to pass through the line of bikes; we are not there to block the carriageway.  Maintain several seconds between bikes and ride in single file but offset (not directly behind the bike in front).

    4. Breakdowns and Incidents. If you breakdown or are involved in an incident use the M25 emergency phone services which will pinpoint your exact location. Then go behind the barrier or up the embankment but a short distance back up the motorway. DO NOT PARK UP TO ‘PROTECT’ THE SCENE but clear the hard shoulder for emergency vehicles. You really don't want to be hit by your own bikes if things do go wrong. The entire motorway is covered by CCTV and The Support Riders so help will be with you soon.

    5. Pinch Points. The Dartford Crossing does create a potential problem. However, we have negotiated a biker only lane (Lane 15, far left) which will be maintained open. There are several sections on the motorway that is limited to 50 MPH we aim to keep to those limits. If the motorway traffic does become stationary then those that feel confident to do so should filter.

PLEASE NOTE: Any rider joining the Ring of Red is deemed to be in control of their own machine at all times, exclusively responsible for their actions on the road, conduct themselves with full regard for their own safety and traffic laws, ride within their capabilities at their own pace and to respect the solemnity of the occasion

what time are people planning to leave ?

I was thinking of taking the back route passed brands to get to the M25 just so I don't have to do the A21 and then the M25

Luckily I still had one of my t-shirts from my larger days which just about fits over my jacket.

Good showing so far, counted at least a dozen bikes at clackets.

EDIT: Oh wait there's another side, a lot more than a dozen bikes then.
