Thanks to Microsoft and an incompatible update my company laptop self destructed
Everything was backed up but as we have to use encryption software we have found out that what should be a full hard drive image, and hence once restored should in theory allow a fully bootable laptop again, does in fact not boot - because of the encryption

My company is one of the worlds largest I.T. outfits so I am a little surprised that my laptop backup was not as good as I thought, I have had to spend all day up to 1am this morning re-imaging my laptop and restoring what I can and I still haven't finished :cry2:

But, but ...I don't understand: you aren't 22 years old and wearing a dirty T-shirt. How can you work for an IT company?

Ps I empathise in spades with your backup problem. I must learn how to do that!

In fairness, our I.T. department is fantastic with some very clever bods, it is just the encryption software that is used that has crippled things and the encryption recovery software doesn't do what it claims!!

Going to be at it all day reinstalling all the applications I use. Some can't be installed though until I get to work on specific pieces of hardware as they need to be attached to my laptop for the software to install, as the software was installed while on various courses.

I am a hardware/systems engineer for a well known (within the I.T. Industry) company. There is no geekyness here, and I loath Microsoft massively, and as such am much more happy with Unix.

Until my original company was bought by my current one we used to have dual built laptops, windows and Unix (Solaris) and we all used Solaris so never booted windows so never had issues but company policy is a standard build, non dual boot, so just windows :(

That reminds me of my often quoted remark when I used to still apply for IT jobs:
"You have to have 25 years experience but be no older than 25 to get an IT job now!"

Do you know? I haven't understood a word of that. I am ill-educated in the ways of the grey box; I sound like one of those awful people who like to drive but haven't a clue about what's under the bonnet.

ah solaris.. i miss working with it.. .. .. gotta love MS :) . my work machine is dual boot with linux these days, i only revert to windows when absolutely necessary , usually when certain software doesnt run particularly well in a virtual env .

Was it a cheaper battery or due to lack of use?

My TZR battery failed every year so I bought a CTEK conditioner and leave it connected to the TZR whenever I am not using it. Never had an issue in two years since.

I had some"friends" over last night for some munchies and drinks and stupidly I had left my laptop on. I am now a member of the Eddie Stobart spotters club, with text alerts - they have been very busy today. I also appear to have taken up the sport of dogging and have many messages according to the email alerts I have. My "friends" think I may also of joined 1 or 2 other sites but they can't exactly remember. They also have no idea what my passwords are to these sites, so I can't logon to stop the frigging text and emails. This apparently is very funny....
