could be a knackered battery or alternator

try swapping the battery from your girlfriends bike for a day or two and you will soon find out which is faulty

Whack on a new battery and test the voltage of the battery when charging. It should be around 13.6 to 14v. If it isn't the battery it could either be the reg/rec unit or the alternator.

Test your reg/rec as above because if it's going, it could take your alternator with it - leading to something like this. You can check the state of your alternator without taking the cover off by getting a multimeter out. You should have no continuity between the three poles, or between any pole and earth.
